Planning on using your hot tub after all the ghosts, goblins and ghouls have gone home after Halloween?

When you hop inside, the last thing you want to see is cloudy water that looks like it came straight from the swamp.

Hot tub water should be clean and clear – not milky and hazy. If your hot tub water looks more scary than serene, here’s what you should do:

Check the filter cartridge

When confronted with cloudy or foamy water, take a look at the filter cartridge. In particular, you’re looking for:

If your cartridge looks filthy, soak it overnight in a filter cleaner. Come morning, keep an eye out for the following:

Should your cartridge exhibit any of these signs, it’s time to replace it with a brand new one. You should see an immediate improvement in water clarity.

Look at the filter cycle times

Take a look at your hot tub owner’s manual for runtime information. A good rule of thumb is to run the filter on a continuous cycle for about 10 hours to help resolve water cloudiness.

Chemical testing

It’s important to test your water to know the true chemical levels in your hot tub so that you can then adjust the levels accordingly. That’s why home-based testing is always important.

However, if you want something more substantive, bring a sample of your hot tub water to Oakville Home Leisure for a professional-grade test.

Once the results are in, we’ll advise you on how to adjust the sanitizer and pH levels accordingly.

Use a clarifier

Clarifiers work by locating and sticking to organic matter, causing it to break down.

Add a small amount of clarifier to your hot tub and then run the jets for about an hour. During that time, the clarifier should collect the contaminants that are making your water cloudy.

Empty and refill

Sometimes, you just need to drain and refill the hot tub, especially if you haven’t done so in about 3-4 months.

Higher water temperatures tend to draw out more pollutants, such as:

If the cause of water cloudiness is in the water itself, no amount of chemicals, filtration, runtime or clarifier will be enough.
